Cairns Airport to Port Douglas: Transfer Options Explained

The question I am asked most often, by a long way, is some version of this: "We land in Cairns. How do we get to Port Douglas?"
It is a fair question. Port Douglas does not have its own commercial airport, so almost everyone staying there flies into Cairns. The drive is roughly 68 kilometres and usually takes a little over an hour, much of it along the Captain Cook Highway where the road runs between the rainforest and the Coral Sea.
There are four main ways to make that journey. Each suits a different kind of traveller, and I would rather you choose the right one than simply book with us.
OPTION 1: A SHARED SHUTTLE
Scheduled shuttles run between Cairns Airport and Port Douglas accommodation. They are usually the lowest-cost option for a solo traveller or a couple.
The trade-off is time. A shared shuttle stops at several hotels along the way, so the journey is longer than driving direct, and you travel on the shuttle's timetable rather than your own. If your flight is late, it is worth checking in advance what the operator's policy is.
Suits: solo travellers and couples on a budget who don't mind a longer trip.

OPTION 2: A TAXI OR RIDESHARE
Taxis wait at the airport rank and rideshare operates in Cairns. For a journey of nearly 70 kilometres the fare adds up, and arranging a return trip from Port Douglas to the airport can be less predictable than booking in advance.
Suits: last-minute travellers who need to leave immediately..
OPTION 3: A HIRE CAR
If you plan to drive yourself to the Daintree, the Tablelands and beyond, a hire car gives you the most independence. The drive itself is straightforward.
Keep in mind that you will be driving after a flight, on unfamiliar roads, and that the coastal section has bends and a lot of scenery competing for your attention. Parking and one-way fees are also worth checking. Port Douglas' town centre is compact and walkable, so many visitors find they don't need a car once they arrive. I have written more about that in How to Spend a Relaxed Day in Port Douglas Like a Local.
Suits: independent travellers planning several self-drive day trips..
OPTION 4: A PRIVATE TRANSFER
A private transfer means a vehicle and driver booked for your party only. You leave when you are ready, there are no other passengers and you are taken directly to your door.
With us, this is how it works:
- Your driver meets you inside the terminal, by the baggage carousel for your flight, when your plane lands, holding a sign with your surname.
- We track your flight, so if it is delayed we adjust. There is no extra charge for a late flight.
- Your driver helps with the luggage and takes you directly to your accommodation in an air-conditioned Mercedes.
- It is only your travel party in the vehicle. We never combine bookings.
- Child seats can be arranged when you book. Please tell us the ages of your children so we can fit the right seats.
- If you would like a stop on the way, for example a supermarket, let us know when you book. Stops need to be arranged in advance and an additional charge applies.
-
Suits: families, small groups, anyone arriving after a long flight and anyone who simply wants the first hour of their holiday to be easy.

What the drive is like
The first part of the journey takes you through Cairns' northern suburbs. After Palm Cove, the highway meets the coast and the scenery changes. Between Ellis Beach and the Port Douglas turn-off, the road follows the water closely, with rainforest-covered hills on one side and the sea on the other. Rex Lookout, along this stretch, is one of the best places to stop if you have arranged it in advance.
Our personal view is that a scenic road like this is best experienced as a passenger where you can fully take in the scenic views.
Planning your return journey
When booking an arrival transfer, I strongly recommend booking your return to the airport at the same time. It means one less thing to organise at the end of your holiday, and it guarantees the timing you need, particularly in school holidays when we book out further ahead.
Allow for the full drive time plus your airline's check-in requirements, and a little extra buffer. If you're unsure, reach out to us and we are happy to advise based off of the current conditions.
Which option is right for you?
If cost is the deciding factor and you are travelling alone, a shuttle makes sense. If you will be exploring well beyond Port Douglas every day, a hire car may suit you. If you are arriving with children, a lot of luggage or after a long-haul flight, or you simply want the transition from airport to holiday to be calm, a private transfer is worth considering.
