Rainforest Walks and Waterfalls Near Cairns: Choosing the Right Private Day

View from Alexandra Lookout, Daintree, Far North Queensland

Many guests come to me with a picture in their minds: a walk through ancient rainforest, ending at a waterfall. It is a lovely idea, and it can be done. But the rainforest around Cairns covers a large area, and the best walks and the best waterfalls are not always in the same place.

Here is how our three private rainforest days compare, so you can choose the one that matches what you are hoping to see.

If the daintree is what you are dreaming of

Our private Cape Tribulation & Daintree Rainforest Experience is the day for anyone who wants the Daintree itself: the river, the rainforest road and the place where the rainforest meets the reef.

The day includes:

  • A crocodile cruise on the Daintree River
  • The cable ferry across the river
  • Lunch at Turtle Rock Café
  • Cape Tribulation Beach, where two World Heritage areas meet
  • A guided rainforest walk on the Marrdja boardwalk
  • A stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company and its tropical fruit orchard
  • Alexandra Lookout, with views over the Daintree River mouth and the Coral Sea

The Marrdja boardwalk is an easy walk through lowland rainforest and mangroves, suitable for most fitness levels. This is a rainforest and river day rather than a waterfall day.

It is a long, full day. We collect guests from Cairns at around 7 am and Port Douglas at around 8 am. I have written about it in detail in The Ultimate Daintree & Cape Tribulation Day Trip Itinerary.

If you want rainforest and a waterfall, closer to Cairns

Our Kuranda Village & Rainforest Tour is the day I suggest for guests who want both in one day without as much driving.

You travel up the range on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, spend time in Kuranda village, have lunch, then take a guided walk to Barron Falls before returning over the rainforest canopy on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Barron Falls flows most strongly in the wet season. In the drier months it is still a beautiful walk, but expect less water.

If waterfalls and swimming holes are the priority

Our Paronella Park & Waterfalls Tour heads south of Cairns. It includes Babinda Boulders, a stop at the Babinda Bakery, a meal at the historic Mena Creek Hotel and Paronella Park, where Mena Creek Falls drops beside the ruins of José Paronella's 1930s castle. There is an afternoon departure for guests who want to stay for the evening Darkness Falls tour.

Babinda Boulders is beautiful but has strong currents in places. Please follow the signs and swim only in the permitted areas.

Can i build my own rainforest day?

Yes. We also offer private half-day and full-day charters with your own itinerary. If you have a particular walk, gorge or waterfall in mind, tell us and we will advise whether it fits comfortably into the time you have.
